Format Painter Problems

I have some Word templates with styles specific to these templates. When I use my Format Painter it works on everything except the bullets and dash styles. Do you have any ideas as to what might causing this. If I use the Format Painter on the bullets and dash my set-up changes. Hopefully someone will be able to figure this out.
