The main question is how to install a ghost image from a USB thumb drive.
I work for a major health organization and they started using Ghost about six months ago, I have been here about two months. The person who builds images is use to doing this with MS tools and dose a great job with Ghost. I get a new image on DVD and boot to it and there is no problem. We have a ten seats or so license for Ghost server. All our new computers are HP B5100 and come with DVD/CDRW installed.
The problem comes up with some older computers that are returned like a Dell desktop and Dell D600 laptop nether have a DVD. Let me say that I am supposed to have enough rights to do what ever I need (I was hired as the only IT person for this division).
I have used Ghost 8 at four other companies and never had a problem installing, cloning or reading from images.
I use the boot wizard to create a boot disk or two if needed. I have the image on a server that I have full access to. I run the boot disks and at the prompt to put in my password after I put it in I get an access denied. It tells me to type in net help 5, which tells me to check the file to see if its write protected or misnamed. It is not, I also moved the image to another server and then to my computer as a full access share.
And still get the access denied after I put my password in, So I now look for other ways to install. I do not get mad I find other ways to do it.
Now I know how to make a USB thumb drive bootable, I need to know how to make it act like a Ghost image. The laptop is bootable to a USB mass storage device but not an external DVD device. I could load Bartpe on it but it would not be able to use the Ghost image because it has to load first. I have external USB drives and can do what I want with them, I formatted one with system files and the image and with system files you can only run DOS commands. So the Ghost image would not install, I also used a boot ini batch file to try to load it.
