Group on a field from the sub report in the main report

Short version – Using Crystal 8.5 with Mas 90 4.05. I have to use a sub report because of a left outer join issue. I need to insert a group on the main report based off a field in the sub report. Can this be done? If not, can a group be done on a shared variable from the sub report?
