HR could be the problem

At my previous employer, the head of HR was over from London and talking to one of our IT chaps in the back of a taxi. In conversation with her, she mentioned that people lose their effectiveness after 5 years at a company.
This then made the IT member of staff feel rather uncomfortable as he had been there for 17 years!
