IE has lost settings

In IE 6.0, the browser has lost some settings and there is nothing listed under the advanced tab under tools, internet options. I have tried to reinstall 6.0 after removing all instances of Internet explorer and it tells me that it already exists and stops.
Any suggestion. The machine is XP Professional running Norton Antivirus with 512 Mb RAM.
