In what scenarios would number of OLAP cubes proliferate?

Hi,
In a Finance Industry’s usage of OLAP (say Essbase or SAS OLAP),
i) how would cubes be designed?
ii) in what scenarios would number of cubes proliferate?

I’m concerned about bad design, and then end up with way too many cubes to maintain well.
