Intranet makeover

Hello all,
About to revamp our current intranet & looking for suggestions. Currently we have a lot of hyperlinks on the main page & I wanted to introduce a clean look. My plan is to organize the info in groups or maybe by departments. I also wanted to include Marketing to broadcast upcoming events our hospital is involved in etc.
Looking to hear what everyone else has done at their company or got any advise?
