IPC$ administrative share lost

by eansor . Updated 23 years ago

Why is it I seem to find the most obscure problems?

I have a Windows NT 4.0 PDC running SP6a. It generally runs like a work horse and rarely presents me with any problems. Recently it began disallowing client browsing to server-based shared resources. The clients were getting the error message: The server is not configured for transactions. I FINALLY found a corresponding error message in the knowledge base that pointed reference to restoring the IPC$ share. Sure enough when I look at Shares under the Server icon in Control Panel there is no IPC$ share. I then found out that you can restore an administrative share using the net share IPC$ command under a Command Prompt. (DUH!) This solved the problem…BUT, and now here is the remaining problem…the IPC$ share is not recreated after a reboot of the system. I have uninstalled Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service and reinstalled same. I don’t know where IPC$ comes from and microsoft ain’t telling anywheres that I can find. Any body got any ideas?

Thanks as always. You guys are the best!
