Is the Linkys router WRT54GL (L for Linux ) worth the extra cost ?

I am looking to replace a Dlink router with a Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GL and would like to have to option to use the free open soucre firmware after the warranty expires on the product and I am not sure if I can use that firmware on the WRT54G? Does anybody know if this possible??
