IT Department Location Question

I have worked for companies that had their IT Department segregated from the rest of the company and at companies where the IT Department sat amongst the rest of the company. I prefer to have the IT Department seperate but I wanted to get everyone else’s opinion. Besides your personal preference, I am also wondering how you think that the location of the IT Department affects the actual IT Department. This question popped up in my head because I currently work for a company where we sit around other non-IT departments.
