LMHOST for faster lookup?

I just reinstalled a WinNT workstation but I’m having a problem with very slow access to the server database folder. I have a drive mapped directly to it but it takes almost 2 minutes to browse the contents or start the app. I can browse the root OK. Can I map this share directly into an LMHOST file to speed the connect to the folder?
