lmhosts file

It is my understanding that Win95/98 are not able to map to an NT Server share using the IP Address and sharepoint. Can somebody provide me with an explanation for this and tell me whether or not an lmhosts file on the 95/98 client will fix the problem.

Also, what would restrict the 95/98 client from just mapping to the share using \\servername\sharename?
