Local Printer port to \\server\printer lost connection

What I’m looking for is a way to make presistent a cx to a printer local to a (intRAnet) w2003 server.

Prob/Symp: Can install the printer via “new local port”: \\server\HP Laserjet 4250. As long the general user (not admin) doesn’t shut/restart they’ve got the cx. If they do shut/restart the printer cx is gone with exclamation point on the printer icon.

Currently (to resolve): change the port used by the printer, delete the local port, delete the printer. Install the printer creating the local port again.

I can’t let the general user have admin rights to their workstation or the server.

On friday I may have installed the printer while logged as the admin. when I left the printer did work. This am it doesn’t.

I get the feeling it is a rights issue of some sort. So, today, remotely, I stayed logged as the general user and removed (as described above) & added the printer — but before I could create the new local port — I had to go to Window explorer and explore \\server — I was challenged and provided the admin&pw. Then that _right_ stuck around while I created the local port for \\server\hp lj 4250.

By dint of being logged in as the general user and providing the server pw is that the proper way to make this printer cx persistent? Or not? if not how to?

Thanks, any guidance or insight is much appreciated!
