Lost: 1 CD-ROM

Windows XP keeps loosing my CD-ROM. It will work at boot up & will even boot off the Win XP CD but when I am in XP, the CD-ROM will not show up in the My Computer or device manager. I had XP try to detect hardware but it cannot find a CD-ROM. What can I do?
