lost ability to drag and drop in XP Pro

Does anyone have a fix for this? For weeks now I can not drag and drop files on the desktop or in any program. I’ve tried to restore, without success. I use a lot of graphics type programs in my work and I’d really like to regain the function of dragging files and images. Right now, I get by, but only just.
