Lost Active Directory/Domain

On clicking on the “Active directory domains and trusts” on a Win2000 advanced server, I am receiving a message ” The configuration information describing the enterprise is not available, the specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted”. After this the Active directory domains and trusts screen appears I can then browse for my domain find and click on it only to receive a further error message, “Cannot connect to a domain controller in a pre windows domain”
Any clues out there would be appreciated.
