lost cd rom after reinstalling win2k

I was helping a friend, his hard drive crashed. We installed a new harddrive and win2k server. After it rebooted windows could not use or find the cdrom. We tried detecting it and checked the makers web site for known problems, also checked the hardware comp. list. Could find no reason the cdrom will not work. Also tried a known good cdrom and just booting to a dos floppy.
