lost data in word 2000

I am faced with a situation of trying to retrieve data from corrupt word 2000 files. I know that when one creates a word file that there is a temp file that is created. How does one utilize the temp file to recreate the data. Would you be able todo this with excel,powerpoint, or access. Thank you for your help.
