Lost digital audio support in XP.

After trying to play a multimedia disk, I received a message that windows did not support the format. The system then hung-up. Now, I am unable to play any audio files. My system also cannot play the standard Microsoft sounds. If I click on any buttons, the clicking sound is continuously repeated until shut-down. Any ideas?
