Lost files………

by martin.still . Updated 24 years, 4 months ago

I recently had a system crash on boot-up from which I could not recover only by repairing Windows 2000 using the ERD, Windows would not repair from the most current ERD and I had to use an earlier one. Most applications etc seem to be working exceptfor a batch of files that exist in a folder I call “Work” which is located on my second HDD ie. Drive ‘D’, I had a shortcut to the folder situated in the Start Menu which was my usual method to access the files, the files are mostly Excel 2000 spreadsheets.

Since the crash I cannot open the files and get an error message stating that they are read-only, I have checked the file properties and the read-only attributes are clear, all the files are still in place but refuse to open. I can move them to another folder but cannot copy them, I don’t have backups and would be really grateful to recover them from what I believe to be a permissions error. I have tried re-setting permissions and ownership of the files to no avail but am not sure ifI am going about it the right way.

I would greatly appreciate any help offered and some advice on setting permissions etc on my stand-alone PC which is not networked in any way, or if you think my problem may not be anything to do with permissions please advise me.
