lost microsoft Serial number?

lost microsoft Serial number?
I lost me registered CD of W98,so tried install a friends copy(he lost SN & documentataion),using my Serial number,no luck,I assume MicroSHAFT has a script embedded in each install CD that prevents using other SNs?

Any ideas?
