This is a really, annoying mouse problem- and I’m at a total loss as to how to proceed…
It started with one mouse (wireless) dying on me. I had a backup, a MS Intellimouse Explorer 2.0 (which works perfectly). I used this mouse for many weeks before these issues began.
Basically, I will lose the ability to click with the mouse. The pointer moves fine. Sometimes, it’s the taskbar and desktop icons/buttons that won’t respond, other times, it’s whatever windows happen to be open (web, programs, etc…). If a window stops responding, the whole title bar goes “gray”- as in, the red X fades. I can use ctrl/shift/del- to bring task manager- but because it is then an open window, must use KB shortcuts to go through it. To minimize a window, sometimes right-clicking the taskbar button works- other times I must use KB shortcuts in device manager to close the window (the window won’t respond to the right-click/close command).
I have updated the Intellipoint software- though I had never even had to install it previously. Device manager shows absolutely nothing wrong, anywhere. I’ve drilled into every setting- looking for some sort of issue/conflict.
I run up-to-date antivirus/spyware & also ran the typical online scans, as well- nothing. I ran sfc to double-check files were ok- nothing. I’ve tried running auto and manual BIOS startup- thinking maybe Windows wasn’t addressing the mouse correctly- nothing changes.
Here’s the final kicker: the wireless mouse is USB, as most are now. When I lose the mouse click function- and then plug in a wired, USB mouse- it also exhibits the same problem?? To that end, I’ve also dug around to find out if there are any USB conflicts or such- nothing again!
I’m at my wit’s end. I really don’t want to do a reinstall of Vista- but this is getting ridiculous. Sometimes, the mouse works for hours- other times, it’s gone at boot-up.
It’s so aggravating that I cannot seem to find anything wrong, at all. There are no error messages, nothing obvious in any logs…
Any help would be so very appreciated,
Tracy
