Lost my DVD Drives

After three years of working ok I suddenly lost my DVD drives. Device manager shows them but states it can find the software, but not the hardware. I have tried new drives, same error. These two drives are plugged into the primary on board hard drive controller. I tried both controller, no go. I have a ZIP drive plugged into the secondary controller, it works ok. Tried the ZIP in the primary, works ok. I pluged in a USB DVD drive, same error as the two internal ones. I have uninstalled/reinstalled, tried updates, virus scan etc. Still no luck.
