Lost my rightclick “open with” abilities

When I rightclick on a file, I use to be able to choose which app to open it with from a drop down list from the “open with” command. That is gone now and all that remains is simply the word “open with”. But when I choose that, nothing happens. That at least use to give me a pop up box to pick an app from.
