lost network icons cannot rebuild connection HELP

Hello,
Windows XP Pro Service pack 2
lost all network icons, including dial-up and wireless
cannot rebuild connections says service is not started. I have run virus cleanup and checked the cables, started and restarted network connection services. I can ping the network card. when I try to ping anything else it says destination host unreachable. I think that he network folder in the registry is missing??? Short of reinstalling is there any solution,has anyone seen this happen?
