Lost Network

by shantie . Updated 20 years, 7 months ago

Three computers networked, all with Winxp pro.
Two computers in one room and the other one is in another room probably on approx 30ft network cable. This is the one with the problem. The lady working this computer phones me every two days saying she has lost the network and cannot print. This has been going on for a month. I go in, go to system restore and the network is back again. Except once when windows firewall had blocked the Lan connection. Two days ago I set this user as a limited account and myself as administrator, just to see if it was something she was doing but today again she called, lost network. I was thinking of cleaning it all out tonight but the system restore has got me confused and think cleaning it out would not help. So tomorrow morning I have told her not to switch in on until I get there. When I get the network going it seems to work all day, switch off and the next morning when she switches it on she looses the network, I am sure it is something she is doing but cannot figure out what?? The only problem I can see is on a ADSL 4 port hub with internet connection. If I put all three computers together in a line, 1-2-3, I loose no 3 computer, being the one I have the problems with. If I go 1-2-empty-3, I get the network. I have tried an ordinary network hub and this new ADSL hub same thing, I have tried a new network cable for the problem computer. I have tried manually setting IP addresses, and autodetect setting, same problem. Both have used Nortons Int Security, now using McAfee Int Sec, same problem. McAfee is set to allow all communication on LAN. Something is happening in between the system restore point and when she looses the network but what??? Please help, pulling my hair out over this one. Thank you
