Lost the hard drive?

I have a Dell Inspiron 8000 Laptop Running Windows ME. I can boot it up but it is slow I can log in open up applications, go on the internet, but I cant save anything to the hard drive. Under properties it says that the hard drive size is 0 and there are 0 unused bytes and 0 used bytes. I cant run disk check or disk clean up or disk frag, with each I get theres not enough memory. In Device manager the drive the drive seems to be installed with a generic type 55 driver. I tried updating the driver using the OS disk but it didnt work. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
