Lost Windows XP key

I have a HP PC that a tech installed Windows XP earlier and now the license has run out. I need to activate windows but the product key on the pc does not match bc he used his own copy of XP. Am I out of luck as I cannot even access the pc at all now? Any help is appreciated.
