I’ve been tucking into Marmite most of my life.
However, during a spell ‘down under’ working for a bunch of people I’m not allowed to talk about, I discovered Vegemite. Actually if the truth be told, I found myself rather gingerly, hesitantly almost, unscrewing the lid of a jar of Vegemite with a feeling of impending disappointment, due to the fact that I couldn’t find any Marmite.
But nay !! Forsooth – this Aussie-nonsense called Vegemite actually tasted alright. It definitely wasn’t Marmite but it sort of grew on me, until when I returned to the UK I found myself seeking out sources where I could then buy Vegemite – shying away from the staple food source called Marmite.
I am now, most definitely, ambidextrous in the Yeast Extract Department: Marmite has its own definitive flavour but oddly Vegemite appears more stable when scooped out on a knife, and seems to spread further for some odd reason.
I have now discovered a third variance within this species – Route66. I’m only on my 2nd jar so far, thus a definitive comparison is yet some way off.
Which, if any is your personal favourite – and why ?
Or does the mere mention of the substance throw you into uncontrollable fits of panic ?
