Microsoft priority updates

I recently had a lot of work done on my PC. I have XP and put in two hard drives, new mother board, new almost everything. When I logged on to Microsoft updates it showed I had 78 priority updates. They went through the first phase but would NOT download. I want to keep IE 6 and not download IE 7. What should I do?
