I’m still exploring localhost 127.0.0.1. It appears that I’m unable to ping that address. According to Greybeard770, (in my last post) “You should be able to ping that address successfully if TCP is properly installed. However, when I attempt to ping it I get the “Request timed out.” message. Also, I have another computer online (WIN98) over a different dial-up connection which is able to ping 127.0.0.1. This tells me that there is some validity to Greybeard770?s statement (not that I doubted you Greybeard).
Let me give you the specifics on this computer I’m having the problem with. Its a laptop computer running Windows XP Pro. I connect it to my home LAN which consists of a desktop computer running Windows XP Pro and another laptop running Red Hat Linux 7.2. I use simple file sharing to share files between the two XP machines. All machines connect to each other through a linksys cable/DSL Router. I use a cable internet connection when connected to the network.
Pinging 127.0.0.1 doesn’t work whether I’m connected to the network or not. In fact, my other XP machine, on the network, is also unable to ping 127.0.0.1 even while connected to the network. I haven’t tried it with the linux box. All computers on the network have DHCP assigned IP Addresses assigned by the Router.
