I over saw an R&E Technical Computing Environment grow from two APPLE LISA computers running floppy-net to an international organization. We tried most of the naming conventions listed here at at one time or another and regretted using each one within a year.
Our environment was by nature, very flexible as design/drafting assets were assigned and reassigned; as new and more powerful workstations and servers were added to our asset list and older units were farmed out to areas waiting for their first computers.
We settled on a two alpha digits for the city; two alpha digits for building; two numeric to keep a count. Everything else was managed from the asset management software – providing us with a central location for all computer related information and allowing us the flexibility to move units to where the greatest need happened to be at the time.
