I have to admit, I’m absolutely terrified.
My latest hard drive is a 320 gig WD crossing the 10K hours power on time very soon. I’ve wanted to toss out my older drives, but the new ones I’ve seen all have failure rates upwards of fifteen percent.
There isn’t a part I fear failing more, barring a catastrophic PSU failure, than the hard drive. A 350 dollar processor can ruin your week (at home), but today’s hard drives? That’s your entire month.
This is for at home, so it’s all SATA.
I’ve considered the WD AAKS series, some of the hitachi drives, but I’ve had bad experiences with seagate and the now defunct maxtor.
I saw samsung drives for sale too, and won’t rule them out.
I’ll be buying the drives in pairs of two and running them RAID 1 (mirroring) for the first 4000 hours/six months of ownership.
I don’t want to get anything smaller than 500 gigs a drive, and I’d prefer not to pay more than 15 cents a gig. By this febuary about six of whichever drive I pick will come in.
What are you guys ordering at work and what are your failure rates?
