I need some assistance with an error I’m getting with Norton Ghost version 12.
Briefly, let me explain some background on the problem.
I have several Ghost Images that were made for a variety of Dell Optiplex systems. These images are stored on a network file server. Previously, I had been using a Ghost 10 disk to boot from the CD and launch the Ghost recovery utilities. I would start the Ghost Networking Utilities, Map a Network Drive to the location of the images then copy the image to the new PC. This process had been essentially flawless for about 2 years.
2 weeks ago my company began purchasing a new Dell model (Optiplex GX755). I created the image of this system with no problems. However, when I tried to boot the non-imaged systems from the Ghost 10 CD the computers blue-screened explaining that there was some problem with the hard drive (either a virus or bad HD sector). Considering these PC’s were fresh out of the box I thought this unlikely and called Dell Technical Support.
After a long conversation with their support we discovered that the GX755’s are using a new SATA driver for the Hard Drives and that Ghost 10 did not have this driver in its library. Considering that Norton had recently released version 12 I thought (perhaps naively) that purchasing the latest version would correct the problem.
In one sense I was correct.
Ghost 12 boots from CD just fine and loads all of its utilities with no problem. Unfortunately it has created a new issue. I am unable to map a network drive.
Here are the details of my current issue:
When I click “Start Networking Services” Ghost 12 appears to start the services correctly. However, when I then try to map a drive or change the network configuration settings I get the follow error message:
“Process ‘The pipe is being closed’ reported and error executing the required operation.
My first thought was that the Ghost 12 CD didn’t contain the correct drivers for the Integrated Intel NIC. I rebooted the computer and first went to the utilities console to load the most current dell drivers for the NIC. Ghost responded that the drivers had been loaded sucessfully. I then started the networking services and again was told that the services started successfully.
I used the build in Command Window tool to use sc.exe to check the status of the networking services and their configuration. From what I could see everything should have been functioning correctly. It was not. When trying to map the drive I am still getting the same error message and cannot get the PC to communicate to the network.
In viewing the IP settings in the Ghost GUI – it does not appear that the device is pulling an IP address from our DHCP service. When I try to do a renew/release I get a stop error telling the that the action could not be performed.
Also, I am unable to get a response from the loopback address of the NIC. I’m forced to conclude that Ghost 12 is not loading the correct NIC drivers but that leaves me stuck.
Has anyone else had this problem?
More importantly does anyone know what I’m doing wrong or how I can fix it?
A couple of other notes – if it’s meaningful. These Optiplex GX755 computers have come preloaded from Dell with Windows XP Pro SP2 installed. This problem has never occurred with the previous GX520, GX260 and GX170L models that make up the company’s desktop environment.
Thanks for you time.
