Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that just lately, many of the posts contain lines from song lyrics. Or for that matter, the subject of the post could be interpreted as a cue for a song? I’m probably one of the most guilty parties, it must be said up front, and Maxwell and Oz often throw a few song-lines into the ring!
Perhaps this goes to show that there’s more to us than IT and that we do actually listen to music. Or, are we just hankering for those long forgotten days of yeateryear when we had the TIME to listen to music and LISTEN to the lyrics?
A few years ago, many artists were covering sixties and seventies hits. Now it seems, they have moved on to covering 80’s stuff. I have been listening to Gary Jules version of the 80’s Tears For Fears Hit ‘Mad World’. Kids are raving about it, thinking it’s pretty cool, hip and trendy…but most of them don’t remember the original, which is a far superior offering. Mention ‘Tears For Fears’ to them and you just get a blank look! Even ‘Pondlife’ (Westlife) have had success with an old Barry Manilow hit (Mandy) and it got me thinking. What’s going to happen in another twenty or thirty years when the next generation of manufactured bands come around and are looking for something to fill a cd (or whatever)….are they going to say “Hey! I know, let’s cover that old 2004 classic…”
Is there anything ‘original’ out there?!!! Of course, back in the last century (!) people had time to ‘write’ songs, and we had the time to appreciate them.
Perhaps (in fact, almost definitely!) MP3 will be replaced with something else and all the fuss over filesharing and suchlike will be long forgotten in the mists of history. Each generation has a different way of doing things…my grandparents had 78’s and wax cylinders, my parents and I had 45’s and cassette and now everything seems to be CD or MP3. We used to hire videos if we wanted a night in…now it’s DVDs or DivX movies downloaded via broadband. What will Guru Jr be listening to in ten years time I ask? Will she even still need her ears or we be into direct cerebral injection by then?!!!
I’m willing to bet the format will be VERY different, but the content will be ‘samo samo’…same song, another flash in the pan ‘artist’.
