office Pro 2003 will not install

I purchased a oem edition of ms office 2003 Pro and it claims that the key they gave me is invalid. The company I purchased it from claims that there must be a previous version preventing the install but I have uninstalled a trial version that was on the machine when purchased. am I being scamed or is there something I need to do to make it work?
