Outlook Express Inbox messages missing

Outlook express compacting error
I had to interrupt Outlook express compacting by cancelling the process.

It was in the midddle of the sent folder.

when I restarted, all the email after 1/01/07 in the inbox was gone. everything else was intact including the sent folder. Where did those emails go and can I recover them?
