I’ve got a situation with a P2P network. I’m having issue with the machines being able to browse the network machines and in particular we’re having problems with reliable connectivity to the “server”. We get “Error \\pc name is not accessible. You may not have permission” and “Workgroup is not accessible. You may not have permission to use this network resource.” errors. These errors come and go, and they don’t necessarily happen with all the machines at the same time, unless it’s the “server” that can’t access the workgroup.
– I didn’t not install the network. It’s strictly a home built network (home office FWIW).
– We’re not positive just how long the problem has existed, but it is certainly here now. It’s possible we didn’t notice before because the administrator who was using the “server” has recently moved to a different machine in a different building.
– Internet access is never affected by this situation.
– One machine did have a bad NIC, but that has been resolved
– There is a new Netgear FVS318 router, and a new FS116 switch, the machine with the bad NIC was connected to the switch briefly.
– We have a wireless network that I did install, it consists of a Buffalo AP to an external antenna, in 3 other buildings I’ve got a Buffalo AP/repeater repeating the wireless signal. This has been working really well since we installed it last July. The above mentioned administrator is working via this wireless setup.
– The connectivity issues exist on the wired and wireless portions of the network. Writing this, I realize I haven’t tried taking the wireless off the network.
– I have double checked that all local firewalls are disabled, that the computer browser is started and that NetBios over TCP/IP is on, on all the machine in the workroup.
– His AV of choice is TrendMicro’s security suite, and we’ve tested with the firewall on and off.
