Tried to establish a LAN connection between my HP desktop (windows XP, service pack 2 Media Center Edition) and another desktop (Gateway, windows 98 SE). Used a cross over cable (and the proper ethernet adapters) for this operation. When I ran the “setup a home or small office network” The Hp installation wizard gave me three options for the connection (note: the Hp desktop is already on a wireless network !!). I selected option 2, went through the procedure. Generated a Network Set-up disk and used it to set up the other computer (win 98 SE). After rebooting both computers, the LAN icon on the HP showed that the connection was established, but I could not ping either computer. On top of that none of the computers showed the other’s computer name icon. I made sure that the work group ID was the same for both.
Please advise.
Thanks,
harry
