We have about 40 PCs and 15 thinclients running in one of our admin buildings. Recently, the issue of shutting down PCs at night came up to conserve power. Although, all PCs go into hibernation after a set amount of time thus cutting down on energy use, I’ve been asked to see if we can save more if we were to shut down machines every night.
As you all know, due to updates being pushed out and such, it’s always been recommended to leave machines on during non-business hours. So my question is…what is your policy? Do you think we could realize a significant cost savings in electricity for this number of machines? If nothing else, is it worth it to shut these machines down so we can at least say were doing something “green”?
