pre windows user logon character limit

Then we noticed the pre-Windows 2000 user logon name, which appears to have a limit of 20 characters, and for those two usernames, the pre-Windows 2000 user logon names were the same. Is there a way to get around this. I have a username that is more than 20 characters long.
