Problems with Office XP not sending and receiving

Hi there, I am having some trouble with my Outlook account. When I use the ‘send/receive’ button it says the operation failed. However, if I go into tools, then click send and receive while choosing the pop account it will send and receive email. Any idea of what is wrong here? Thanks so much.
