Pros and Cons of Hosted Email

by rangi . Updated 22 years, 4 months ago

Is there any benefit in a small office network with 7 PCs running it’s own own mail server ? The network in question (peer to peer) has such a server and none of the staff really knows how it works nor has it been upgraded for years. This LAN already has broadband access to the net so a hosted email service would provide these benefits.
– Better virus/spam detection.
– Remote access to email when laptop users are offsite via dial up.
– Webmail access for non laptop users when offsite.
– No special admin skills required inhouse and a nice warm feeling from knowing mail is being properly managed.

The only negative I see is that mail between local users will have to go to the remote server and back. But broadband should make this invisible.

Is there anything else to consider here ?
