Public folder posts showing up as unread

A few of my users are experiencing the following.
After viewing public folder postings the ones that they have viewed get marked as read but then a few days or sometimes weeks down the road they show up as unread again. I am beating my head againstmy desk with this one. Why is this happening? Help!
