Retrieving data from tape

Is there a generic way to grab info from an LTO tape? We used a proprietary format to push data to a tape – the software can’t read the info anymore. The data is there tho – is there anyway to grab it? Using BackupExec or NTBackup is not an option since they want us to format the tape first – which defeats the purpose!
