After my main machine crashed I tried recovery console and an XP repair, neither of which let me access my data. Kept getting access denied in the first even logged in as administrator, second went to a reboot loop I believe due to my XP cd being pre-sp1 and having everything updated.
I decided to boot up the Ghost CD I had to see if
I could pull a few irreplaceable items off my harddrive with any utilities there. Quite by accident I found out that I could copy and paste folders which normally are locked or come up as access denied to other drives or partitions.
This is how I arrived at this conclusion.
If you boot with Ghost and goto “Advanced Recovery Tasks” then open “System Restore” Then once in the System Restore Wizard you select “Restore Files and Folders” and click Next. When the browser pops up Changing FIles of type to “ALL *.*” allows you to browse to ANY folder on the machine and copy said folder to any other partition or drive even protected folders which Windows XP recovery console showed as access denied or were locked inside windows XP
I believe this is a major security compromise as no password is asked for and I was able to copy everything and anything as long as I selected its folder. only one file is selectable at a time. I already notified Symantec of the problem as well. What do you think? It saves money on buying NTFSPro at least.
