static ip causes lost server connection

Running XP; when I put a static IP on the machine, I am unable to access one of the Win 2X servers on our network (the domain controller). Error message (paraphrased): \\server is not accessible. you might not have permission to use this network resource. contact admin. the network path was not found.
I am an admin on my PC and member of domain admin, domain user, server oper, and admin groups on the network. Am able to access all other servers on network except this one. Other admins in the office able to have static IPs and access this server w/o a problem.
