I’ve recently reinstalled Windows on my laptop (twice in one weekend, actually). Everything was going fine until last night. The tray icon for Windows Updates appeared, and ever since then I can’t open Internet Explorer without a new svchost.exe appearing in the process list, and it eats up all CPU and over 100 MB RAM. The only way I can recover the system is by forcing it to log out.
I’ve tried using system restore points, but since this installation is less than a week old, I don’t have much to go from.
And the Windows Update icon in the tray is stalled at 12%. Hasn’t changed for 30 minutes.
Firefox works fine (unless I’m using the IEtab extension). I’m guessing I got a virus somehow, but nothing’s showing up in my scans.
Anyone have some tips for what to do? I’d really prefer to not have to reinstall Windows for a third time in one week.
