User profiles lost on log off

I have nt4 wrkstns and w2k pro machines that are loosing the user profile in a reboot or log off. Everything goes. its as if it was the first boot after install upon rebooting.I suspect it has something to do with the registry. Have not been able tofind any answer in the MS KB. Any suggestions?
