W2000 External HD

Windows 2000 will reconize external USB HD in device manager only I can find it in Disk Manager or in windows explorer 160GB with 4 partitions could not format them all to FAT32 have 1 in FAT32 and 2 in NTFS. Q: is USB capable of this sort of capacity and how do I get to see it.
I have have formated it by plugging direct into desktop which is able to show it.
